Not, whatever some dewy-eyed theorists may have asserted, simply a matter of 'drawing out'. 'Out' requires both a real starting-point and a choice of direction.

That's why children have to be given as much information and shown as many ideas as possible, so that they can make comparisons and find a starting-point and a direction that interest them.

So herewith my thanks to my parents, who encourage all of us to keep our eyes open and ask questions. And thanks to many of my teachers, the best of whom taught their subjects with interest and commitment.

Nett results – informed curiosity and the capacity to take an interest, plus after several years of diffidence the power to decide what I am not interested in and can happily pass by.
