"Hamilton has reclaimed Britain's dominance of the sci-fi genre", proclaims The Times. That's as may be, but he doesn't seem to like any of his characters: and to my mind that is a fatal flaw in any kind of fiction. If he also suffers from the "magnificent trilogy" syndrome that leaves many an author incapable of completing a story in less than five hundred pages, that's just a sign of … the times.
