Never apologise, never explain. A simple enough watchword if you happen to be a powerful and influential prime minister in the robust reign of Victoria. Not so readily applied in everyday life.

So when is it worth explaining things? Hm. If you're in the right, it's not always diplomatic to make this too clear. If you're in the wrong, explaining isn't guaranteed to make things any better. So what with one thing and another, perhaps it is indeed better never to explain.

"Like all Betty's explanations, it was highly plausible. There wasn't a hole anywhere. It was even, quite possibly, true."
